Choosing your Data Terminal
The Data Terminal you decide to use is an important one!
First, you want something that is simple for your employees to use and that will allow them to move through the clock in and out process quickly and accurately: electronic time clocks. You also want to consider what you will be using to clock in or out. Do you already use an employee id card? If so, what kind of input does it have on it? Magnetic Stripe? Barcode? RFID Proximity Card? Or do you want the employee to punch in a Personal Identification Number (PIN)? We have all of these options available and also combinations of some of these features. Another option that you need to ask yourself is "Do I want to prevent my employees from clocking in or out for each other?" (buddy punching). If so, biometrics is your best option. We have several options of this as well. We offer fingerprint readers and fingerprint time clocks, hand readers, and even facial recognition. The next thing to consider is how you will be communicating the employee data back to your computer. If you are a small office and the clock will be a short distance to your computer, you can use serial communications. If it is a longer distance, you will probably want to consider communicating through your computer network via TCP/IP, much like with guard tour systems. This allows you to assign an IP address to the clock and it will communicate directly to the software through your network. If the clock is off site, you may want to consider modem communications. This requires a data telephone line at the site of the clock and a modem at the computer end. Please feel free to contact us for free consultation on any questions you may have on these and any other questions you may have.
